Sharps new 10 megapixel CCD sensor
Monday, November 7th, 2005Sharp announced a new 10 megapixel CCD sensor, the c RJ21W3BA0ET which measures 7.17 mm by 5.31 mm or 1/1.7 inch. The sensor will be ready for production in January 2006 and will be used in compact digital cameras. It will deliver images with a resolution of 3766 by 2801 pixels.
Although more pixels is great with the marketers, the public is now slowly understanding that you need at least a tripiling in megapixels to make a substantial improvement in quality. I would rather see improvements in lower noise and higher sensitivity as in fujifilm sensors.
The specification of the sensor is as follows:
Shape name - RJ21W3BA0ET
Optical system size - 1/1.7 type
Color filter - Primary color
Entire pixel - 1054 ten thousand pixels [ 3766 (horizontality) x 2801 (verticality) ]
Effective pixel - 1026 ten thousand pixels [ 3696 (horizontality) x 2776 (verticality) ]
Pixel constitution - Square pixel (2.05 mu m angles)
Sensitivity - 90mV (TYP.)
Saturation power - 550mV (TYP.)
Smear ratio - - 88dB (TYP.)
Operating temperature limit - - 20 DEGC - + 70 DEGC
Package - 32 pin plastic SOP (*)
